The Wandering Eyes

Well, it seems that the sidelong stare that Esai has (which we've always considered his cute way of being coy or shy) is actually the Bug's way of compensating for two wandering eyes and a double astigmatism.

Esai will be the proud owner of a fancy pair of (durable) Spiderman glasses next week. We will also start two months of patch therapy, where he will wear a patch over one eye for three to four hours a day, the other eye the next day. The glasses should help his astigmatism, the patch will help his lazy eyes.

We're assuming we will see (and so will Esai) good improvement within two months. If not, the ophthalmologist will talk to us about possible eye surgery. I honestly, don't have any reason to think that the patches and glasses will not work, so I'm not too concerned about surgery at this point. I think we caught this early enough and the problems are minor enough that they will resolve with some intervention.

The astigmatism might never go away, but it might resolve itself in time. I think they're more concerned about the wandering eyes than the astigmatism.

What I am concerned about is how the HECK do you keep glasses on a 20-month-old?? Esai doesn't like to wear glasses, hats or anything on his face, so this will be quite a challenge.

I'm also sad that my baby has to adapt yet again. That he has to overcome another hurdle. It seems so unfair that someone so perfect and innocent and sweet would have to endure any hardship. I know he'll get through it with flying colors, and I know he'll be fine. It just makes me sad. That's all.

It's Much Harder Than Last Time

Last time when I was pregnant, I didn't realize what a simple life I led. When I was tired, I slept. When I was hungry, I ran out to Taco Bell to satisfy a whimsical craving. When I felt lazy, I laid on the couch and watch TV.

This time, when I'm tired ... I chase Esai around the house. When I'm hungry, I try desperately to swallow whatever we have in the kitchen (which is fairly slim since I can't bring myself to grocery shop). And when I'm feeling lazy, well ... it's just not an option until 8:30 p.m.

And I realize I'm hardly the first mommy of a toddler to feel tired and pregnant, so I don't think people should feel the need to laugh and give the "this is what you asked for" speech; or tell me "well, I did it and survived." This IS what I asked for, and I will survive. No doubt on both accounts. But, right now, I just want a hug ... and someone to vacuum the stairs.
