I spoke too soon.
The Bug's back in the crib. The past two nights, he didn't want to sleep in the big-boy bed, so he spend the night in his crib ... which seemed just fine for both of us. I supposed he'll go back and forth for a while before he settles into his bed. Either bed is fine with us.

The Bug's Big-Boy Bed
Well, we decided to get the Bug his first Big Boy bed. Our plan was to just put it in his room and let him decided if he wanted to sleep in his crib or his new bed.
Saturday night, as I snuggled him on our rocking chair, I told him ... "You can try the big boy bed; but if you wake up and want the crib, it's not a problem." As I laid him in is bed, he popped his head up, looked around, and flopped his head down. I thought surely he'd be up in an hour or two.
I waited and waited. I woke up at 2 a.m., wondering where my wake-up call was. I popped my head in Esai's room, and he was snoring away on his bed. I didn't hear a peep from the Bug until 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning, at which point he just got out of his bed and knocked on his door for mama to come get him. I opened the door, and he smiled and said "Na-na?" So we snuggled and had some na-nas for a few minutes.
Same deal on Saturday night. No problem with the big-boy bed, but Esai didn't wake up until 6:15 a.m.
Color me SHOCKED! I'm proud of him, but a little sad. Another milestone, ya know?

Bugs, Babe and Blogging

The Littlest Ornelas at about 11 weeks.

Halloween Bug! On his first Trick-or-Treat adventure, Esai was blessed with gorgeous fall weather and a butt-load of candy.

Esai's getting used to his patch, as you can tell. He wears it about three or four hours in the morning, an doesn't seem to be bothered by it.

Mmmmm ... Milk, strawberries and Cheerios. Could life get any better for a Bug?

Esai loves playing on the coffee table. Yes, ON the coffee table. Toys of choice: Jungle animals. He likes to make them kiss, then he'll hold them out for mama or daddy to kiss them. Pretty cute, eh?

Watching Esai Grow
I marvel at my baby Bug every day -- even though I know he's not-so-much a baby anymore. He's a big boy. And he'll tell me that: "Are you a baby?" "Nooooooo." "Are you a big boy?" "Yup." But I like to remind him that he'll always be my baby.
But he's come such a long way. From my little floppy 6-pound kid who slept all the time (so much so Rene was worried that "he's lethargic") to my boisterous, playful, curious, affectionate, willful and ever-so lovable toddler, who is just now getting back to that sleeping thing daddy was so worried about.
He's not talking much yet (we're seeing baby steps in that department recently), but he's so communicative. And he's so attentive. I hope it's not just a phase, but I don't think I've ever seen a child (from age 1 to 18) who is so good at listening and following directions. I think it's because of the standing ovation he gets every time he obeys; but ... whatever works, right? And he's good with a series of directions, too: "Throw your snot rag in the trash, then go get another book." And he does. I'm so impressed with him. The only caveat about the listening thing: That child cannot resist the TV or VCR buttons!
And he's such a sweet, sweet Bug, too. I'm just so in love with him (can you tell?). He loves to kiss and hug everyone and every thing. Each night he goes around to give everyone a night-night kiss .... Daddy, Mama, Big Brother, Baby Girl, Chester, Lily ... and Paco (if Esai can catch him). And if the dogs are just laying around the living room, Esai will go over and start petting them very gently saying "dah," which I'm pretty sure means "dog" (of course that's the same word he uses for "duck," too).
His sleeping is getting much better. I'd say he sleeps through the night about 40% of the time, wakes up once about 30% of the time, wakes up twice 20% of the time, and the other 10% he's suffering from a snotty nose or teething issue. We're planning to transition Esai to a big-boy bed later this month or next. We just have to find the perfect sheet set! We're thinking Go Diego Go!, but we're open to suggestions. I've shown Esai a few, and he seems to like it all.
And books! That boy would prefer to have mama read him a story than any other toy in our house! I would say he "reads" no fewer than 10 books a day. More on weekends. Just hands it to me and plops down on my lap. He turns the pages and points at the pictures. He seems to favor Sandra Boynton and Dr. Seuss -- I think he likes the rhythm and rhyme. People laughed at me when I started reading to him at 3 days old, but I told them, "you just watch." And even my skeptical husband frequently comments that he's "never seen a kid who likes books that much."
TMI alert below:
I'm still nursing him through my pregnancy, thus far. My milk dried up last week, and this has been a source of sadness for both of us; but neither one of us are ready to give up the snuggle time yet. Esai gets a lot of comfort from the nummies, and I have no problems with nursing him as long as we're BOTH OK with it. Admittedly, there might come a time in the next few months, when it's just too uncomfortable, so we might. But at this point ... this works for us. And my husband is supportive of any decision I make in this realm. Esai's off the pre-sleep (nap and bedtime) nummies for the most part. We have an occasional evening nurse, but we generally just read our stories and rock to sleep. For the most part, it's just the after-work, Missed-You-Much nummies and the post-tantrum comfort nummies that he needs. And that's fine with me for now. PLUS, with as tired and wiped out as I am right now, it's very comforting TO ME, to be able to vegetate on the couch for 10 or 15 minutes whilst snuggling with Esai.
Anyway ... to say the least, I'm just so proud of my son. What an incredible blessing it is to watch him grow. He's such a miracle in so many ways, and I'm so blessed that he picked me to be his mama. I must have done something right.
